The operation which took place in a hotel known as Ananwoma hotel was part of efforts by the Techiman police to rid the municipality of prostitutes and criminals.

The Court presided over by His Lordship Alexander Graham ordered them to pay a fine of 250 penalty units which is equivalent to about GH¢3,000 each or in default serve jail term of 12 months imprisonment.

About seven of them who are from Nigeria explained that they came to the country due to the economic hardships in their country (Nigeria) and pleaded they will never engage in prostitution again if they are pardoned.

The judge prior to his judgment questioned why they resorted to prostitution out of the many jobs in the country adding that since its the only lucrative job they find, they are to pay the said amount or face jail term.

Section 255 of the Criminal Code, Act 29 (1960) states that "it is an offence for anyone to stand by the roadside or in an obscure place to smile at the opposite sex and make gestures with the purpose of engaging in prostitution or other immoral purposes".

Twenty five of the accused persons pleaded guilty to the charge and admitted they were commercial sex workers, while two others pleaded not guilty.

Two others, a man and a twenty three year old woman who are said to be the owners of the Ananwoma hotel also pleaded not and are to return to the court on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 together with the two ladies who pleaded not guilty.
