The achievement was announced by Dr Sheba Kunfah, Acting Nanton District Director of Health, at a community engagement in Nagdigu during Ghana WASH Week.

The initiative is being implemented under the WASH for Health and Enhanced WASH interventions by the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), with support from USAID and Global Communities. Afram Plains Development Organisation (APDO), a CONIWAS member, organised the engagement.

Dr Kunfah said about 90 latrine artisans had been trained to construct durable household latrines. Five health facilities also received mechanised solar-powered boreholes, while two small-town water systems serving more than 5,000 people were provided at Nanton Kurugu and Gbungnaa.

Environmental health officials urged residents to sustain good sanitation practices, while stakeholders called for stronger partnerships to expand access to safe water and sanitation.

Meanwhile, four communities in the Sagnarigu Municipality, namely Kukpehi, Santugu, Batanyili and Saguli, were also declared ODF as part of the Ghana WASH Week celebrations.

The achievements highlight ongoing efforts to improve sanitation, prevent disease and promote healthier communities across the Northern Region.
