Ga Central Municipality awards 8 farmer

The Ga Central Municipal Assembly has observed the 35th National Farmers’ Day celebration with the recognition of 8 farmers for their immense contributions towards the growth of the agricultural sector.

Twenty-two farmers were nominated throughout the Municipality of which seven came out as winners to be honored with one Agric worker.

The Criteria for selection of theaAwardees were; scale of operation-small, medium, Large, Innovativeness of the Farmer, Cultural Practices, Record Keeping, Receptivity to Technology, Farm contribution to the community, General Impression, Environmental Awareness.




The prizes included wheelbarrow 4, spraying machines 4, cutlasses 9 wellington boots, pieces of wax prints, a tabletop fridge, washing machine, fertilizers, and certificates.

Mr. Waleed Ibrahim, a 35-year old farmer from Walled Farms in the Municipality, was adjudged the Overall Best Farmer and received Deep freezer, wellington boots, a piece of wax print, Wheelbarrow, KNAP Sack Spraying Machine, and a certificate.



Speaking on the theme: “Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture towards Agribusiness Development” at Sowutum, Mr. Francis Mensah, the Acting Municipal Director of Agriculture, commended farmers and fishers for their efforts in keeping the economy secured.

That they do by producing for industries, for export to earn foreign exchange, and to feed the population.



In addition, they contribute to the creation of employment opportunities and for wealth creation, especially in rural communities, he said.

Mr Mensah urged farmers to work closely with the directorates of Agriculture and other stakeholders to be abreast of modern farming practices and take the advice of agricultural extension agents seriously for maximum returns.



He said they should take advantage of the government’s policies and programmes including subsidies, Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development, and Rearing for Food and Jobs to improve their living standards.
