The facility is managing them with infusions and Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) treatments while they await laboratory confirmation of their conditions.
Five samples out of the seven cases had been sent to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for laboratory test and the results are expected to arrive later today, the hospital’s authorities disclosed this on Tuesday.
Mr. Daniel Adonteng, the Head of Administration, Cape Coast Metro Hospital, noted that the patients started trickling in at intervals with diarrhoea and vomiting on Saturday after a downpour on Friday night.
He said as of Monday evening, the facility had received seven cases, two of whom were children brought in by their mother who showed no symptoms.
He explained that the samples of the two children could not be taken because they arrived late.
Contrary to the suspicions of the health staff, the patients were from different places including Elmina and Abura, he said.
“All seven of them are on admission at a special holding place created for such cases,” Mr. Adonteng said adding that “some of the cases were very severe.”
“We cannot let them go until we confirm the cases. If it is negative, we will let them go but for those who may test positive, we will manage them until they fully recover,” he said.
Mr. Adonteng assured that a cholera response team had been constituted to attend to all cases and that there was no cause for alarm.
