Out of 17,514 people screened for the disease in the area between year 2009 and 2010, 437 tested positive.
Mr Danso Yeboah, the District Director of Health Service, said there was therefore the need to step up the education campaign to help the people to change their sexual lifestyles.
These were contained in a speech read for him during the celebration of district's World AIDS Day at Obogu.
"Universal access and human rights, action now" was the theme and it brought together students, heads of department, health workers, civil society groups and the general public.
Mr Yeboah said as part of an exercise to prevent "mother- to- child-transmission", 4,457 expectant mothers were tested within the last two years and 68 of them were found to have the disease.
Mr William Ansah-Kwakye, the District Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, said stigmatization and discrimination were major challenges hampering the fight against the disease.
