PFJ programmes keep attracting more farmers- MCE

The Suhum Municipal Crops Officer, Mr Edmund Acquah, said the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programmes keep attracting more farmers in the Municipality.

He said in 2017, 1,864 farmers enrolled onto the programme in the Municipality and this year, the programme recorded 2,460 farmers.

He said the Municipality through the PFJ has seen remarkable increase in maize production in the past two years.

Mr Acquah made these remarks in an interview after a town hall meeting organized by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua at the St. Theresa Catholic Church at Suhum with funding from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung of Germany.

The meeting was to bring local governance closer to the citizens, for them to demand accountability from duty bearers.

Mr Acquah said the PFJ programme had economically improved the living conditions of the beneficiaries, since they had been able to raise money to cater for their families through the sale of farm produce.

Mr Acquah used the opportunity to advise the youth to venture into agriculture, since it was economically viable and could change their fortunes.

The Coordinator of the Justice and Peace Commission for the Suhum Parish, Mr George Gyane Twum, said through the programme, they have realized that most of the citizens did not understand the local governance system.

He said the citizens believed that all the responsibilities for the development of the districts depended on only the executive without factoring themselves in the governance process.

Mr Twum said the sensitization drive from the Justice and Peace Commission helped to disabuse the minds of the people to know their rights and responsibilities and they started to ask the duty bearers the right questions concerning development in their localities.
