A recent district survey indicates that 48 percent of households rely on boreholes, pumps, and tube wells as their main source of water for domestic use. This underscores the vital role borehole infrastructure plays in sustaining rural communities across the district.
However, a significant proportion of residents still depend on less secure water sources. About 23.9 percent of households draw water from unprotected wells, raising concerns about water safety and potential health risks. Other notable sources include pipe-borne water located outside dwelling units (9.5 percent), protected wells (9.4 percent), and surface water sources such as dugouts, ponds, lakes, dams, or canals (3.2 percent).
The reliance on unprotected and surface water sources highlights the need for expanded investment in safe water infrastructure, improved borehole maintenance, and increased access to treated pipe-borne water systems.
Water and sanitation stakeholders emphasize that improving access to potable water will not only reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases but also enhance productivity, particularly among women and children who often travel long distances in search of water.
As Mamprugu-Moagduri continues its development drive, expanding safe water coverage remains a top priority to ensure healthier households and stronger communities.
