The seven-member committee, sworn into office under oath of secrecy, elected its first Chairperson to lead operations for the next three years. As a sub-structure of the White Volta Basin Board, the committee is tasked with managing water resources, promoting integrated water management, and safeguarding the environment across the basin.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Seidu Alidu, Kumbungu District Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and convener of the committee, highlighted persistent environmental challenges — including deforestation, bushfires, water pollution, poor fishing practices, and sand winning — that have plagued the area for years.
He revealed that the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), through the EPA and with support from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has launched a five-year initiative dubbed “Stakeholder Action for a Resilient Landscape in the White Volta (SARL)”. The project aims to strengthen community resilience, improve smallholder livelihoods, and restore the ecological balance of the basin.
District Chief Executive Mr. Alhassan Mahama commended the initiative, noting that effective implementation of the committee’s mandate could help curb poverty, rural-urban migration, and local conflicts. He emphasized that the SARL project would promote climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land management, and water security, urging members to work with dedication and unity to achieve lasting impact.
