According to Nene, chiefs also must be given equal opportunity to play an active role in the formulation and enactment of policies and direction for the country, adding that such powers must not be limited to political actors alone.
Taking the current parliamentary practice into consideration, Nene Sackitey II, was of firm conviction that voting in the August House is done on party lines, a situation he says births bad policies and as a result retarding Ghana's progress since independence.
Although the Konor, who was speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com and TV about the chieftaincy institution in Ghana’s current political and democratic setting accepted that democratic rule is the way to go, he insisted that traditional rulers must however be given equal space in governance for the mutual benefit of the people.
“Traditional leadership, we’re all for the people, it doesn’t matter if you're in this party or that party, we want stability. Whether economic stability or security stability, that's what we want for our children”, the highly respected chief added.
He said it would therefore be an unpardonable mistake for any country, especially in Africa, to relegate chieftaincy to the back-burner, insisting that traditional leaders play a critical role in promoting peace and stability across the country.
He cautioned faceless persons behind schemes to diminish traditional leadership to reconsider their position since such moves may end up proving too costly for the country in the future.
“It will be the biggest mistake for anybody to think traditional leadership should go behind the back-burner”. I know there are some people who may be thinking that way but it is not going to work. The moment traditional leadership diminishes we shall have problems”, he fumed.
Meanwhile, touching on some of the things he has done to impact the lives of his subjects in the area, Nene Sackitey II noted that about one thousand and five hundred students across Manya Krobo have been supported financially in order to assist the youth reach their full potential.
The students, he added, are mostly second cycle and tertiary students including professional and medical schools.
