Assin-Fosu Municipal Assembly commences dredging of drains

The Assin Central Municipal Assembly has commenced massive dredging of storm-drains and the Betinsin River to ease the perennial flooding in the town.

The move is to effectively flush out the chunk of waste materials, mostly sand and garbage, which have built up in the drainage system.

A visit by the GNA to some communities revealed that huge volumes of silt had been taken out onto the banks of the River and were being loaded out of the site to prevent it from being washed back onto the system.

Mr. Nicholas Fiifi Baako, told the GNA the Assembly had committed more than GHÂ¢ 40, 000.00 on the exercise which is expected to be completed within a month.

He said Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for the Area contributed an amount of GHÂ¢ 20, 000 with the Assembly adding another GH¢20, 000.00.

The MCE was particularly happy with the dredging of Betinsin River in the Metropolis that often overflows its banks and cause extensive flooding.

In all, he announced that a total of 800 metres of the waterways would be dredged to drastically reduce the overflow as the rains set in, adding that it was expecting funds from Urban Roads for desilting of other choked gutters in the Municipality.

In addition to that, procurement processes were far advanced for the construction of a collapsed bridge at Zongo Junction pending approval and pleaded with the citizenry to contribute their quota towards the development of their communities and the country as a whole.

The MCE underlined the need for attitudinal change in Ghanaians to help in the fight against sanitation challenges confronting the nation, saying that "the rate at which filth was causing outbreak of diseases and death among Ghanaians was alarming.

He underscored the need for all to make conscious efforts to deal with the menace by maintaining clean environments.

â€œGood sanitation is the cheapest and most accessible healthcare one could ever haveâ€ he noted and warned that the laws on sanitation will be enforced to the latter when social miscreants were caught disposing of refuse into drains were dealt with.

Assembly Members, religious and traditional leaders, and the media were also asked to intensify public education on the need to keep the environment clean.
