Speaking at the Assembly’s second ordinary meeting, the MCE outlined key interventions and plans aimed at improving road safety, strengthening the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and promoting aquaculture as part of efforts to expand economic opportunities within the municipality.

Hon. Akabila explained that revenue mobilisation remains important to the Assembly’s ability to respond to the development needs of communities. Effective collection and management of revenue can help provide resources for infrastructure, public services and other local development priorities.

On road safety, the MCE outlined measures intended to address safety concerns and improve conditions for road users across the municipality. The measures are expected to support efforts to protect motorists, pedestrians and other road users while encouraging compliance with road safety regulations.

She also highlighted the need to intensify enforcement against illegal mining activities. Galamsey continues to raise concerns in mining communities because of its potential effects on water bodies, agricultural land and the environment. Stronger enforcement and collaboration among the relevant institutions are therefore important in addressing the problem and protecting natural resources.

In addition, the MCE discussed aquaculture projects as part of efforts to promote economic activity and livelihood opportunities. Aquaculture, which involves the farming of fish and other aquatic organisms, has the potential to support food production, create employment and provide income for individuals and businesses engaged in the sector.

The development of aquaculture could also contribute to local economic growth by creating opportunities for fish farmers, suppliers and other participants along the production and distribution chain.

The issues outlined at the meeting reflect the Assembly’s focus on combining revenue mobilisation with interventions in public safety, environmental protection and economic development.

The MCE’s remarks further underscored the importance of responsible financial management, effective enforcement of regulations and investment in productive activities to meet the needs of residents.

The Assembly is expected to continue working with relevant stakeholders and community members to advance its development priorities and improve service delivery across the West Akim Municipality.
