On February 23, 2026, officials conducted a working visit to the Tema landfill site in Kpone to assess its current state and evaluate the implications of its continued use.
The visit, led by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, focused on the growing environmental and public health concerns as the facility approaches its limit.
Authorities say protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of residents remains the top priority. They stress that every community deserves a clean and safe environment, and efforts are underway to ensure waste management practices reflect that commitment.
During the inspection, the Metropolitan Environmental Officer of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly warned that the Assembly has just over one month to secure an alternative disposal site for waste from the eastern parts of Accra.
The situation is critical. The landfill currently receives refuse from 10 out of the 29 Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region, as well as industrial waste from Tema.
Officials caution that failure to act swiftly could result in serious sanitation challenges, with potential consequences for public health and the environment.
Government says it remains committed to implementing sustainable, long-term waste management solutions. Engagements are ongoing to identify alternative sites and improve waste processing strategies to meet increasing demand.
