He said the recent Auditor- General's report indicated some gross infractions and breaches of the Public Financial Management Act which resulted in huge unaccounted government funds at the expense of the taxpayer.
He attributed the infractions to the failure by the Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) to fully implement the recommendations in the report, which led to the lost of government funds.
The Minister was speaking at the mass inauguration of Audit Committees for MMDAs and Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) for the Upper East and North East Regions in Bolgatanga.
Mr Yakubu observed that financial advice on Internal Audit Agency's recommendations every year were been ignored, and therefore urged Municipal and District Chief Executives to pay critical attention to the recommendations in order to protect the public purse.
The Minister, who is a former Ambassador of Ghana to the Kingdom of Morocco, further cautioned Heads of Institutions to critically and carefully peruse every document before they signed.
He said the Local Government Act 936 of 2016 placed huge responsibility on the RCCs to monitor the use of funds by the MMDAs irrespective of whether they were donor or Government of Ghana funds.
“If we are to ensure judicious use of government resources and bring to the barest minimum unwarranted infractions in our respective Auditor- General's reports, then our Audit Committees have critical roles to play” he said.
The Director in Charge of Operations at the Internal Audit Agency, Mr. Nathan Yankey urged Committee members to provide the needed financial functional roles to the various institutions to ensure judicious use of public funds.
