Poultry farmers receive compensation after outbreak of bird flu

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has released GHs 20.1 million as compensation to 14 poultry farmers in the Ledzokuku Municipality who were affected by the recent outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu.

The fund is also expected to help them undertake strategic interventions to grow the poultry industry.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Mr. Mordecai Quarshie who presented the certificates to the farmers, expressed his sympathy with them and described the initiative as laudable, adding that it would help the industry and government in monitoring activities in the business and assured of best farm management practices to curb spread of diseases.

He mentioned the need for farmers in the Municipality to intensify their biosecurity measures on farms and also avoid restocking farms until biosecurity certification and management practices are certified by the VSD and Animal Production Directorate.

Mr. Quarshie explained that a biometric registration and certification of all poultry farms in the country is ongoing to set-up a comprehensive database for all poultry farmers in the country.
