This is the first time in about ten years the Assembly has been able to surpass its revenue target following the introduction of new revenue mobilization strategies by officials and enforcing compliance on payment of local rates.
The district has exceeded its revenue target for the first time in a decade and I think we are on course to achieve the 2019 revenue target too, District Chief Executive Madam Katherine Lankono told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.
We have managed to get some properties in the District valued, these give us the mandate to collect property rates, she said: Consequently, from January to February 2019, we have been able to rake in GHC101,000.00.
This phenomenal increase in our revenue performance is unprecedented in the history of the assembly.
Madam Lankono also attributed the increased revenue mobilization to formation of a District Revenue Taskforce when she assumed office.
She described her leadership and officials of the assembly as a development-oriented team that are working hard to improve the livelihoods of the people.
The Assembly in 2018 provided sunhats and sitting places for the district health insurance office to help provide better services to clients and also partnered with other development organisations to provide the Nadowli District Hospital with a neonatal unit, she said.
It is working to get a new morgue for the Hospital by the end of 2019, she said.
Madam Lankono expressed worry many health facilities in the district lacked adequate staff but added that efforts were being made recruit personnel into those areas.
On education, she said the performance of Junior High Schools in the Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) for the past two years has improved considerably due to incentives provided to hardworking teachers and the provision of meals to BECE candidates.
The Assembly has also agreed with some teachers to provide additional tuition for selected schools.
To ensure girls were not left out in education, Madam Lankono said, a Sankana Module Girls Junior High School has been established at Sankana but cited inadequately trained teachers as a challenge facing the school.
