The visit, among other issues, was to explain the Association’s objectives and plans and to bring all riders together ahead of the government’s plan to legalise the ‘okada’ business.
Mr. Michael Kofi Owusu, National President and leader of the team, during an interactive session with the Akatsi riders said the engagement was necessary to bring those involved in the business together “just as the driver unions.”
This, he said, would provide opportunities to riders to gain enough training to improve their services.
With the Okada Riders association, all riders would be trained for better working experience.
Mr. Owusu indicated that the Association would serve as a mouthpiece for the Association in their dealings with the government concerning safety and other relevant issues such as the acquisition of a riding license.
He also revealed that ORRAG leadership was touring most regions in Ghana to prepare the minds of all riders about the need to join the association.
With a membership of over 13,000, ‘okada’ transportation has emerged as an important means of transport in the last decade for many Ghanaians.
Representatives from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the Ghana Police Service were in attendance to educate all riders on the adherence to the required safety protocols when using the road.
Membership cards were issued to participating riders within the Akatsi South Municipality.
The beneficiary riders, on their part, expressed appreciation to ORAG leadership for the visit.
This, they believed, would ensure their safety and address other issues surrounding their operations.
