Old Tafo Municipal Assembly honours farmers on 34th farmer's day

The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has honoured 14 hardworking and gallant farmers within the Tafo Municipality last Friday.

This year's Municipal farmers’ day celebration which is the first of it kind, since the Municipality was curved out of Kuamsi Metropolitan Assembly early this year attracted many dignitaries from all walks of life.

The dignitaries included the Paramount chief of Tafo traditional area, Nana Agyin Frimpong ll, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Old Tafo Municipal Assembly Hon.Fred Obeng Owusu, the coordinating director, Mr. Okofo Boadi, the presiding member, Hon. Frank Dwomo Nimako, clergy, traditional elders, famers, market women, Heads of department, physically challenged among others.

Mr. Emmanuel Osei Gyasi, a 36 year old Agric Development Officer won the 2018 Municipal best worker.

This was based on his hardworking performance in the area for some time now.

It was revealed that, none of the farmers within the area could meet the criteria set by the Agric sector to emerge the 2018 Municipal best farmer in the area.

Mr. Gyasi took home a 36 coloured flat screen television set, knapsack spraying machine, bags of fertilizer, Wellington boot, radio and cutlasses.

The other 14 farmers were also honoured with fridges, bicycle, Wellington boot, cutlasses, knapsack spraying machines among others.



MCE in his key note address said, about 64% of Ghanaians are engaged in the agriculture activities directly or indirectly along the value chain.

He continued that, the local economy of the Municipality is predominantly agriculture.
About 85% of our populace are engaged in agriculture and produce many crops such as yam, maize, rice, cassava, cocoa and oil palm as the major crops.

He gave a background history of the farmers’ day that, the Nation initiated the National farmers’ day celebration in 1984 to honour outstanding farmers and fisher folks at National, Regional and District levels simultaneously throughout the country.

He used the opportunity to highlight on government various policies and interventions since the NPP assumed power in 2016.

These include, planting for food and jobs program, 1D1F, Afforestation Exercise, Free SHS, NABCO, Double track system among others.

He disclosed this when he addressed, the gathering at 34th farmers day celebration at Tapass school park with the theme: Agriculture: Moving Ghana Beyond Aid.

On his part, the Municipal Director of Agric Mr. Kofi Nyarko Sarpong thanked the gallant farmers for their tremendous performance to feed millions of Ghanaians daily.
He, therefore, urged the youth to take advantage of the government interventions of planting for food and jobs programme to engage themselves in farming activities to earn a living since farming is a major business.

Mr. Gyasi, the 2018 Municipal best worker of old Tafo municipality thanked the organizers and the MCE and Member of Parliament for the area for honour done him as the best Agric Development Officer.
