The formation of the task force became necessary after research revealed that most children are reluctant to go back to the classroom after schools closed for the covid-19 pandemic, while other students have fallen pregnant or have become young mothers.

During the workshop, issues of the safe school environment, prevention of pregnancy and re-entry of young mothers, and addressing the psychological impact of covid-19 on school personnel were discussed.

Mrs. Elizabeth Awoonor –Williams the District Educational Director in her address said she is happy about the Program adding that there is the need to train the team on back-to-school advocacy campaigns and dissemination guidelines among people to go back to school with the right message.

She said with the current pandemic it is expected that some children will drop out if a deliberate attempt is not made to encourage them to return to class as the school has resumed.

The educational director indicated that The Program is being led by the Education Ministry, with the support from UNICEF and Plan International Ghana and the training is being done in all 16 regions and in NiPDA, there are 37 participants who will work hard to achieve the aim of the District.

Mr. Nii Ayikuma Tiekuban a facilitator also added that statistics show that the girl child in the early years who are mostly in the JSH are unaware of sex education, so they become pregnant without knowing and hence drop out of school.

He urged parents to educate their children at home on sex education, especially on the need to abstain until she or completes school.
