The Ghana Network for PeaceBuilding (GHANEP) has called on the government to regulate the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the country.
According to the GHANEP, information gathered from its quarterly early warning centre indicated that the activities of the Fulani herdsmen in the Brong-Ahfo, Volta, Northern and Upper East and Upper West Regions were getting out of hand
Mr. Muntaka Hafix, Acting National Network coordinator of GHANEP, who made the call at a press conference in Tamale said, the Fulani herdsmen were engaged in indiscriminate bush burning, thereby degrading the environment and also stealing people’s cattle in ranches.
He said it was regrettable to note that some entire communities were engulfed in the escapades of the Fulani men with the expressed consent of some traditional rulers.
He said in some cases too, Public authorities were said to have issued directives to security agencies to stop any processes to properly register the Fulani and tract their movement as required by the ECOWAS protocol on the free movement.
"GHANEP considers the activities of the Fulani herdsmen as abuse of the courtesy extended to them by the Ghanaian government and therefore called on the government, the immigration service as well as District Assemblies in whose jurisdiction the atrocities of certain Fulani men were rampant to do something about it", Mr. Hafix said.
He also called upon the public to be weary of the activities of the Fulanis in their communities and report the questionable characters amongst them to the appropriate authorities.
