The Chairman of Kintampo branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Mr Yak Seidu has commended the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) for its effort in helping to minimize road accidents in the district.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kintampo that through the effort of the district office of GHA, the frequent accidents that normally involved cargo trucks on the Techiman-Kintampo-Tamale highway had reduced drastically.
Mr Seidu stressed the need for transport unions to ensure that station guards checked against overloading to complement the efforts of the Authority.
He deplored the practice by some drivers, who park along the Kintampo main road and advised them to be law-abiding and adhere to the ethics of the driving profession to win the respect of the public.
“Drivers should not place money above their lives, as well as those of passengers and pedestrians, by driving under risky circumstances to cause untimely deaths”, he said.
Mr Seidu advised the GHA to set up a taskforce to patrol the highways to apprehend drivers, who overloaded their vehicles, and made to face the full rigours of the law.
He appealed to drivers to be extra careful and to adhere to road signs, saying “the best driver is the one who returns home safely and peacefully after the day’s task”.
