The Kumasi Frafra Group of the Christian Mothers Association has presented assorted food items valued at GHC 500 to the Mother of Mercy Babies Home at Sirigu in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.
They include two bags of rice, two bags of gari, one bag of sugar, five cartons of key soap. Before the Catholic church built the orphanage in 1984 at Sirigu, it was common in the area that babies whose mothers lost their lives shortly after birth were labeled as idiots or wizards and were therefore killed or abandoned to die.
Since then many of the children have grown and attending junior and senior high schools.
The President of the Kumasi Frafra group of Christian Mothers Association, Mrs. Mary Zobil said the group which was formed twelve years ago is aimed at promoting the social and spiritual welfare of members. She said apart from the donation to the orphanage, the group has also donated fifty bags of cement each to the Sacred Heart Parish in Bolgatanga for the construction of its new church building and an office for the Christian Mothers in Bolgatanga.
Mrs. Zobil said the orphanage is dear to their hearts and that they will continue to share their widows might with them.
The sister in charge of the orphanage, sister innocentia Debpuur who received the items thanked and prayed God to reward them hundredfold.
Sister Bebpuur mentioned feeding as the major challenged facing the home. She also appealed for help to replace their fifteen year old rickety vehicle.
