Ghana to witness decrease in fish imports through intensified aquaculture dev't

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye is confident the country will witness reduction in fish importation from next year following government conscious efforts to increase fish stocks in the county's water bodies.

According to her, government is committed to promoting aquaculture in various water sources including the sea as being practiced in other countries like, Korea, Japan among others.

 

 

This, when effectively introduced and harnessed will bring about increased fish stock and ensure fishermen are able to harvest enough to feed the nation and meet the fish protein requirements of the people in the country, she stated.

 

The Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency in the Greater Accra Region made the disclosure in an interview with journalists after the launch and handing over of artisanal insulated containers to the National Fish Processors and Traders Association at Tema Manhean.

 

 

Madam Afoley Quaye stated that the Ministry has already spoken with some investors who have agreed to train and educate Ghanaian in marine aquaculture, adding that other forms of aquaculture are already in practice in the country but old be intensified to achieve the expected increased stock.

 

 

In the related development Madam Afoley Quaye also disclosed that plans are advanced for the introduction of ahoto oven designed to use less fuel and also to absorb chemicals from their processed fish to meet international standard and be accepted anywhere, and this will boost export of processed fish from the country.
