He noted that some of the farmers have either abandoned farming to join the galamsey activities or sold their arable lands and farms to ‘Galamsey’ operators, a situation that hinders the quest for food sustainability in the district.
He was however happy that the implementation of government policies against illegal mining has made significant impact resulting in a drastic reduction in illegal mining activities in the District. "However there are still reported cases of “galamsey” activities in some parts of the District, especially Anwiaso, Freboye and Tebeso".
He thus appealed to assembly Members and the chiefs to help sensitize their communities to help fish out illegal mining operators so as to protect farm lands in the district. "I believe the fight against illegal mining will help revamp the Agriculture sector", he stated.
He said the implementation of "Planting for Food and Jobs Policy" currently ongoing is towards revamping the agriculture sector, and to create jobs; and urged the people to be serious with the initiative.
