Shama District Assembly Staff build capacity

A three-day capacity building workshop has been held for assembly members and key staff of the Shama District Assembly in the Western Region, to enhance their efficiency in the discharge of their duties.

The workshop, held in Ampenyi in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality of the Central Region, was attended by 50 participants including 25 assembly members, the District Chief Executive, presiding member and other key staff of the assembly.

It was facilitated by Urban Management Institute (UMI), Ghana a capacity building, research and educational institute with the aim to support government to build capacity of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

In an interview at the closing of the workshop, Mr Prosper Dzansi, Partner and Chief Consultant of UMI, Ghana said the workshop was aimed at sharpening the skills of participants to enable them work effectively to accelerate the development of the area.

The platform created enabled the participants, especially new assembly members to probe further into their role in the local government system and it was expected that they would be more efficient in their new roles.

He said UMI, Ghana was committed to its aims of supporting government to build capacity MMDAs to create equitable, comparative, resilient, and sustainable cities and would continue to offer services to further accelerate governments’ development agenda.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Eric Cobbinah in an interview said the assembly was resolute to improve education, waste management, revenue mobilisation and other areas, hence, well equipped and knowledgeable assembly members would facilitate their work.

He said it was in line with this that their capacities had been built to make them more effective in finding solution to various challenges in the district and strategically position the area for accelerated growth.

With election 2016 just a few months away, he indicated the need for assembly members to see themselves as agents of development instead of agents for political parties as their core mandate is to seek the development of the district and not to serve personal interest.

He urged the various political parties to run campaigns devoid of utterances or actions which could disturb the country’s peace.

Mr Robert Mensah, Assembly Member for Supormu- Dunkwa area lauded the assembly and facilitators for the workshop, saying, the knowledge they had received would enable them sharpen them more in the discharge of their mandate.

The participants were taken through various topics on Local Government System, functions of MMDAs, assembly members, committees and various officers, the standing orders, budgeting, public private partnership, social accountability, community participation and team building.GNA
