According to him, their election will help them become more accountable to those that brought them to power rather than the government of the day.
The MCE, who was reacting to President Akufo-Addo’s earlier call for all MMDCEs to be elected, said the call is a step in the right direction, and one that would expand the country’s democratic rule to the local level.
He continued that the election of MMDCEs would also go a long way to eliminate all forms of interference that usually come with their work as Chief Executives.
He said: “Personally I support the president’s agenda; I have been an assembly member before and with my experience for the past eight years, the kind of interference that you get if you are appointed.
“People may sometimes come in saying that if you don’t do this we will report you to the president. Party people also come in with their pressure. “But if you are elected for a term, you can have your independence in taking certain decisions that will inure to the benefit of the community members”, the MCE said this when speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com.
Although he envisaged some challenges associated with the election of MMDCEs, Mr Kofi Baako insisted that the move, when implemented, would make MMDCE more efficient and effective in their office.
He therefore called for broader consultation to ensure that MMDCEs are elected to ensure total development in their respective communities.
