The meeting, held on Friday, was part of a broader series of stakeholder engagements which brought together approximately 30 leaders of Pragya and Aboboyaa operators to explore strategies for aligning their activities with the Assembly’s decongestion and sanitation initiatives
Addressing the gathering, the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro Director, Samuel Tutuani, underscored the need for the operators to organise themselves into cooperatives or associations for easy identification and effective regulation.
He explained that such formal structures would not only streamline communication between the Assembly and operators but also ensure that the operators benefit from potential support programmes and policy reforms.
“We are not against your operations; we need some form of structure to help us engage and manage your activities properly. If you operate in groups with identifiable leadership, it becomes easier for us to support you and also hold you accountable when necessary,” he said.
The Sub-Metro Director emphasised that the engagement formed part of a series of planned interactions with various transport and trading stakeholders in the area, aimed at ensuring the success and sustainability of the city's ongoing decongestion efforts.
“This is part of a wider exercise to restore order, reduce congestion, and improve sanitation across the city,” he said, adding that “We are counting on your cooperation and commitment to achieving a cleaner and more organised Accra.”
The Sub-Metro Chairman, and Assembly member for Korle Wonko Electoral Area, Hon. Peter Quaye, reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to creating an orderly and clean urban environment and encouraged them to support the Assembly’s efforts by adhering to the new parking directives and cooperating with city authorities.
The leadership of the tricycle and Aboboyaa operators expressed their appreciation for the Assembly’s engagement and pledged to consider the suggestion of forming recognised associations to enhance collaboration.
