During a press briefing at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, the chief indicated that one of the major challenges facing the region was the matter of chieftaincy.
He, therefore, urged the minister to leverage her position to explore the region's traditions and identify the rightful individuals for the installation as chiefs. “People appear out of nowhere and display themselves as chiefs.
Even as I speak to you, ex-convicts are parading themselves as chiefs in Yilo Krobo whereby the chieftaincy acts frown upon,” he said.
“If you look at the Chieftaincy Act, you cannot hold yourself, or someone can’t identify you as a chief once you have been convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction.”
He recommended that the traditional council undergo reforms to effectively fulfil its responsibilities as a statutory entity.
He also stated that the regional house of chiefs should investigate the activities of the judicial committee, as it seemed they prioritize financial gain, favouring the highest bidder over the pursuit of truth in their case rulings.
“Every community has kingmakers, and the customs and practices differ from one another, and these are the concerns that must be addressed because, if care is not taken, the next conflict will arise from chieftaincy issues, as people are hiding under chieftaincy and committing terrible crimes,” he said.
Nene Nanekey emphasized that the law should be applied equally to everyone, regardless of their social status or rank, adding that the government had an important role in ensuring that the law was enforced when someone was found guilty in cases that demanded justice.
