The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has allayed the fears of fishermen over outboard motors.

Addressing the fisherfolks at James Town in Accra on Wednesday, she announced that some 4000 outboard motors have been procured and ready for distribution to the fishermen at a subsidized price of GHc10,000.00 instead of the market price of GHC22,000.00.

This news comes as a fulfilled promise to the fishermen when the Minister at the ceremony to officially begin the closed season promised to ensure there are enough outboard motors ready at the commencement of the opened season in August to boost their fishing activities.

Also, in line with efforts to ensure the fishermen desist from the use of monofilament nets, the minister disclosed that Government through MoFAD would make available the approved nets to the fishermen to buy.

She warned that the Ministry will not countenance any act of lawlessness particularly regarding the use of unapproved fishing methods including light fishing, use of poisonous substances like DDT and carbide among others, stating that the law will deal decisively with those who would fall foul of the law.

Meanwhile, the fishermen have appealed to the Minister to continue to monitor and control the activities of trawlers on the sea so that the sacrifices of the artisanal fishermen would not be in vain.
