Shama district with its capital Shama forms part of the new districts and municipalities created last year by the President, J.A Kufuor were inaugurated at their various locations simultanously on the 29th of February 2008.
The President by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 27 new Districts, 4 Municipalities, Upgraded 26 existing Districts and 2 existing Municipalities.
All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 169.
These new creation arose as a result of the large size of some of the then 138 MMDAs which was not one way or the other allowing the government to fully implement its policies of local governance to the benefit of the entire citizenary.

The Shama District Assembly has begun holding series of capacity building courses for its entire staff to help improve their productivity rate and increase revenue collection.
The Shama District Assembly in the Western Region has empowered about forty (40) persons living with disability in the area with an amount of GHS 14,200.00 to enable them take hold of their economic lives.
The Shama District Assembly has from January to March this year collected GHȼ86,177.29 as against the estimated GHȼ94,999.03 from its Internally Generated Funds (IGF).
As part of efforts to empower communities in the country, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated IT equipment as well as software and training support to five (5) districts in the Western Region.
About sixty persons in the Shama District in the Western Region have graduated after a three month intensive training programme through some modules of the Local Enterprises and Skills Development Programme (LESDEP).
