Downpour causes havoc in parts of Weija-Gbawe Municipality

A four-hour downpour late on Monday, 8th June 2020, and the early hours of Tuesday, 9th June 2020, has flooded some parts of the Weija-Gbawe municipality.

The rain, which started around midnight on Monday and ended at dawn on Tuesday, caused loss to property and rendered some homeless.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Hon Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Mercy Quansah, the Urban Roads Engineer, Ing Daniel Sowah, the Works Engineer, Ing William Okpoti and officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Municipal Assembly, were at some of the affected areas to ascertain the extent of the damage caused by the downpour.

The tour took the team to the Barima Service Station, the Kokroko Station and its environs, all in the Mallam East Electoral Area.

The spectacle that met the MCE and his team was that of residents trying to bail out water from their rooms. Some houses still remained flooded.

One could, also, see the height at which the water reached during the night.

At one of the places visited, electric poles for sale had blocked the water path thereby causing the storm drain to overflow into nearby houses.

Speaking to the media, Hon Patrick Kumor (MCE), lamented about the indiscriminate waste disposal in the area and the erection of unauthorized structures along with the waterways which has given rise to the present situation.

He ended by saying that the Government would do its part to mitigate the situation, but then citizens must, also, be willing participants.
