South Tongu MP supports ICT in basic schools with twenty laptops

Member of Parliament for the South Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Wisdom Kobena Mensah Woyome has presented twenty (20) laptop computers to a number of schools in his constituency.

The gesture was aimed among other things at supporting Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) education at the basic school level including among the final year pupils who are currently preparing for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The laptop donation to the beneficiary schools formed part of the MP’s continuous support towards the provision of quality education at the basic school level. In 2019, Mr. Woyome made a similar donation in the area of motorbike support to Circuit Supervisors (CSs) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Directorate to enhance supervision in schools across the district.

The twenty beneficiary ICT teachers or schools for that matter were carefully selected from among the eighty-six (86) Junior High Schools (JHSs) across the district based on available data on computers in the various schools.

Presenting the laptops at a brief ceremony at Sogakope, MP for the area, Hon. Kobena Mensah Woyome said the donation of the equipment has become more than necessary in the current Covid-19 situation the country finds itself in. He was optimistic that the support would deepen ICT studies among the pupils, emphasizing that the idea of ICT learning is critical and crucial hence the need to push that agenda to a higher level.

Mr. Woyome congratulated the teachers in the district for their courage and sacrifices in the on-going preparation of their final year pupils and students towards the BECE and the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic.

District Director of Education for the area, Ms. Evelyn Araba Zentey was grateful to the MP for the gesture, adding that the support would go a long way to promote ICT education in the schools. She urged the teachers to be resourceful as ICT teachers so as to ensure that their pupils become the ultimate beneficiaries of the laptops.

‘Don’t go and keep the machines in the house; they are for the schools and pupils. The laptops should not become white elephants; let them be beneficial to the pupils, Ms. Zentey emphasized’.

One of the beneficiary teachers and Headteacher of Nutekpor D.A. JHS, Mr. Johnson Cobby Amedzo, who spoke to our news team, described the gesture by the MP as a God-sent moment for them as ICT teachers. According to him, for the past five (5) years, for instance, his school has not had any single computer for ICT studies. ICT lessons have therefore been taught on blackboards or in abstract forms. ‘The laptop will serve a useful purpose.

The children and candidates will have a feel of the machines’, Mr. Amedzo intimated.
