Mampong MCE calls for unity ahead of 2024 polls

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Mampong, Mr. Thomas Appiah Kubi, has called on Ghanaians to approach the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections with great sense of patriotism, and commitment to peace and protection of the country’s democracy.

According to him, Ghanaians need to be guided in expressing their political affiliations and their political choices, and approach this year’s election with responsibility to protecting and nurturing the county’s democracy for future generations, adding that we must maintain the peace and order that we enjoyed before, during and after the presidential and parliamentary polls.

The MCE gave this admonition when he delivered a speech at the 67th Independence Day Anniversary celebration of the Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region held on Wednesday 6th March, 2024 at Tadiem Park, Mampong.

Addressing a large gathering at the event, Mr. Appiah Kubi called on Ghanaians to continue to cherish the country’s democracy and reaffirm their commitment to democracy, adding that, we must uphold the values of unity, diversity and progress that our nation stands for.

He praised Ghanaians for their tenacity and commitment to democracy and development as well as social values which he said would propel Ghana to eventually realize the kind of democracy Speaking on the theme for the celebration: “Our Democracy, Our Pride," the Mampong MCE urged Ghanaians to remember that our democracy is our pride, and it is our responsibility to protect and development Ghanaians yearn for, "as was demonstrated by the forefathers who with a strong belief and conviction, to the attainment of self-rule weathered the storm of hardship and sacrificed to achieve independence from the colonial masters", he said.

He further said our forefathers sacrificed and worked very hard in securing the great freedom and democracy we are living in today.

“Let us therefore as people, strive to build upon the foundations of our democracy with much dignity and a great sense of purpose”, he added.

He also talked about the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, and said under his leadership, Mampong has over the past 7 years seen several massive development in the area of road, education, health among many other infrastructural projects all geared towards ensuring a better life for the people.

Stressing on the free senior high school (SHS) education which provides equal opportunity and access to quality education, he said the NPP government has made huge investment in schools and students across the country, equipping them with the tools and resources they need to learn and learn well.

He, therefore, urged students to be disciplined and grab the opportunity to study hard and make themselves and their parents proud. He further appealed to parents to do their best to ensure that their school-going children are enrolled in school to benefit.

In all, 29 schools participated in the march pass and they comprised 5 Senior High Schools and 12 Junior High School and 12 Primary School. Some School cadets also took part in the march pass.

The Mass Band made up of St. Monica’s SHS, Amaniampong SHS, St. Joseph Seminary SHS and Unity JHS was in attendance with melodious patriotic songs to spice up the anniversary.

At the end the of the march pass, Emmanuel Presby Model School came third, while St. Monica’s Primary School took the second position with St. Monica’s Experimental taking the first position in the primary school category.

Each of the schools took home as their prize two footballs and a certificate, and miniature medical drones while a trophy was added to the school which came first.

In the junior high school category, St, Andrews Practice School took the third place, and Unity M/A JHS settled for the second position and the first position going to Church of Christ JHS.

The schools were awarded with two footballs and certificate and miniature medical drones as their prize.

The Church of Christ JHS which came first in addition to the two footballs and certificate also took home a beautiful giant trophy.

Oduko Boatemaa SHS took the third position and received as its prize 2 footballs, a Certificate and miniature medical drones.

Amaniapong SHS who settled for the second position also received as its prize 2 footballs, a Certificate and miniature medical drones, and St. Joseph Seminary SHS taking the first position in the Senior High /School (SHS) category in the march pass also went home with its prize 2 footballs, a Certificate and miniature medical drones and a giant trophy.

In an address read for him by Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsa, Mampong Gyaasehene, the Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, urged parents to take keen interest in their children’ by investing in them as well as visit them in schools and collaborating with teachers to monitor the performance and behavior of the students. Dassebre also advised parents to be the first role model for their children and to train and inculcate in them good behavior and attitude and good morals.

He also implored teachers to take the students as their own children and teach them not only book knowledge but also support the parents and be the second source of good behavior worth emulating by the students.

Mamponghene further urged Ghanaians especially people in Mampong to continue to respect the traditional authority and traditional values.

He said our culture is significant in the promotion of democracy and cohesion, as well as enhancing peace and tranquility among the people.

He, therefore, urged the people to hold on to their traditional belief and system. He further said nananom would continue to support efforts to promote peace and development in the municipality and the country as a whole.

Daasebre also called on people in authority to be responsible and refrain from corruption and abuse of office for personal gains.

He said those in charge of the Mampong Municipal Directorate as well as the MCE should ensure efficient utilization of resources allocated to them for the development of education in the municipality.

Among the dignitaries who graced the occasion included the Municipal Co-ordinating Director (MCD), Mr. Mohammed Mumuni, the Ashanti North Regional Police Commander, ACP Mr. Prince Jude Cobbina, Municipal Education Director, Mr. Prince Owusu Ansah, Municipal Immigration Commander, Chief Superintendent Mr. Daniel Fialetey Komla, and other security heads, Nananom, the clergy, heads of department and Assembly Staff.
