Training for the Water Users Association (WUA) leaders by Ghana Rice Production Improvement Project (GRIP ) and Ghana Irrigation Development Authority is ongoing in Weta Irrigation, a community in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta region. The team from JICA Ghana office visited the site to see WUA leaders learning how to cultivate rice effectively and efficiently in irrigation.

In the demonstration farm, they observed the differences of planting methods and characteristics among rice varieties. The WUA leaders are expected to share the knowledge and technologies learnt, to their community so that more farmers will benefit from the improvement of productivity and quality in rice cultivation best practices.

Chief Representative of JICA Ghana office, Ms. Suzuki Momoko, pointed out that farmers are the ones feeding the country and thereby contributing their quota to agricultural development in Ghana, in her address to the WUA and other Stakeholders.

She also expressed her concern on growing rice import which is hampering domestic rice production, and her wish on eating Ghanaian cuisines such as waakye, jollof that are 100% made of Ghanaian rice.
