Battor-Zomayi gets first decent classroom block since independence

Residents of Battor-Zomayi in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region are getting their first decent six-unit classroom accommodation facility since the country’s independence in 1957.

The project which is being jointly undertaken by Pencils of Promise, an educational NGO and the community through the North Tongu District Assembly, would be completed by September, this year, for use by the pupils.

Battor-Zomayi is a typical rural farming community with a population of more than 2000 residents. Access road and potable water facilities continue to be a serious headache for the inhabitants of the area.

Since the establishment of the basic school by the community some 40 years ago, pupils here have not seen any structure in their lives before other than a thatched building for lessons. Due to the deep poverty situation in the area, several attempts in the past by members of the community to put up a decent classroom block for their children failed.

The situation has become a permanent demotivating factor for both teachers and pupils. Three months ago, the District Assembly and Pencils of Promise jointly cut a sod for work to begin on a six-unit classroom block facility for the community.

The project provides a place of convenience for the pupils in addition to a headteacher’s office, store and staff common room. DCE for the area, Richard Collins Arku told Ghana district .com that the facility would impact positively on the academic fortunes of the people of the area.

The Chief of Battor-Zomayi, Togbe Bugali Gborglah III described the project as a dream come true. According to him, even though the facility would not entirely eradicate the pupils from the thatched dilapidated structures, it is the beginning of greater things to happen to the community.
