The Dormaa Municipal Assembly awarded GH¢ 50,000 worth of scholarships to brilliant but needy students in the municipality in 2013, Mr Peter Nketiah, Municipal Budget Analyst disclosed.

He said more than 50 students are in Senior High Schools, Universities, Polytechnics and other tertiary institutions pursuing various degree and diploma courses.

Mr Nketiah was addressing the chiefs and people of Danyame, Nsesreso and Sukura, farming communities in the municipality, at separate tax sensitization forums organized by Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), an NGO and Gift FM, a Dormaa-Ahenkro based radio station.

The forums, aimed at sensitizing the people on the need to pay tax are in line with a 14 month project being undertaken by the NGO and the FM station with funding from Star Ghana, and its aimed at promoting revenue mobilization and its judicious utilization in the municipality.

Mr Nketiah emphasised the assembly’s readiness and commitment to support students who excel in the Basic Education Certificate Examination and the West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examination to pursue higher in education.

He explained that the amount spent on the students is from the Assembly’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF) and advised the people to pay their property and other rates.

On security, the Budget Analyst explained that the assembly had recruited and trained a 50 member taskforce, who patrol the Dormaa-Ahenkro Township at night.

In addition, the assembly has engaged 25 military personnel, who patrol the various communities in the municipality, Mr Nketiah said, indicating that the 24-hour patrols had helped to bring armed robbery and stealing which were rife in the municipality under control.

He added that 43 projects were constructed in the municipality last year and gave the assurance that the assembly would continue to ensure equitable distribution of projects in the various communities.

Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Chief Executive Officer of GLOMEF, emphasized that accountability begins at the local level and asked the people to hold assembly and unit committee members accountable.

While advising the people to pay their tax regularly, Mr Ahenu asked the municipal assembly to endeavour to address some of the immediate needs of the communities.

He entreated the chiefs in the communities and other opinion leaders to support revenue collectors in the assembly’s revenue mobilization drive.

Baffour Brafo Okoforobour, Chief of Danyame, appealed to the assembly to re-gravel the main road in the area.
