The Jomoro District Assembly has sponsored 59 needy but brilliant students in the area to Nursing and Teacher training institutions since 2010.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Sylvester Nuamah Daddieh, said this year, 18 nursing students and 14 teacher trainees were sponsored by the Assembly.

He said the sponsorship was aimed at improving the manpower base of the district to promote the socio-economic well-being of the people and area.

He advised parents and guardians to take their wards’ education seriously, instead of spending on unproductive activities and buying of funeral cloths.

The DCE gave the advice at this year’s Nzemaland Children’s Educational Outreach programme at Takinta, in the Jomoro District of the Western region.

The event was on the theme, ’’Encouraging the Nzema Child to Achieve Greater Heights’, and was funded by Elrok Foundation and Genera/Friends, both non-governmental organisations promoting education in the area.

The Assembly rewarded 270 pupils with learning materials and gifts for excelling in their respective examinations.

Madam Patricia Ackah, President of Elrock Foundation, said the NGO, formed eight years ago, had been supporting schools in the area with education materials, especially those at Mpataba and Allowulley communities.

She said the NGO would sponsor students in the area to second cycle and tertiary levels this academic year.

Awulae Annor Adjaye III, Omanhene of the Western Nzema Tradional Council, said the Council offered scholarships to four students, made up two males and two females, who excelled in their final examinations.

He stated that HESS Oil Company and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation had instituted scholarship schemes for Senior High School students in the area.

He entreated the beneficiary students to study hard and pass their examination to enable them to further their education.

He further urged queen mothers in the area to counsel girls to pursue higher education.
