The Kpando Municipal Assembly (KpMA) has pledged its continued commitment to introducing multi-sectoral programmes, to sensitise People With Disabilities (PWDs) on their rights, obligations and potentials, through literacy campaigns and other activities.

To buttress this feat, the Assembly has distributed an amount of 21,600 Ghana Cedis among 55 PWDs, for economic self-reliance, access to technical aids and sensitive devices, as well as educational and organisational support.

Mrs Paulina Delali Adinyira, Kpando Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who disclosed this at a brief ceremony for members of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled at Kpando, said the Assembly is poised for the continuous support for the Federation, adding that the Assembly, had since 2011, adherred to the mandatory deduction of two percent of its District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) towards the upkeep of PWDs.

"We in government shall do all we can to mobilise resources from all sources to ensure the full implementation of the guidelines, Mrs Adinyira added.

She entreated PWDs to join recognised associations to give them the leverage to benefit from support interventions.

The MCE warned beneficiaries to use the resources for the intended purposes.

Mr Rowland Kumfo, Kpando Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare, said over 200 PWDs have benefited from the Disability Fund.

He said the scheme is to mainstream the development of PWDs towards economic self-worth, but observed that some PWDs suffer from multiple disability, and are therefore totally dependent on family members or caregivers for special attention.

Mr Kumfo said the funds are not "Father Christmas" gifts, as efforts are being made to monitor the progress of beneficiaries.

Ms Vivian Nartey, Chairperson of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled at Kpando, said membership of the Federation is 450 comprising the Association for the Blind, Physically Challenged, Deaf/Dumb and Albinos.

She said the Federation is fraught with discrimination, lack of funds, failure by PWDs to join associations and the inadequate nature of the Disability Fund.

Most beneficiaries in an interview with the Ghana News Agency were optimistic of using the support to better their lot.
