The National Identification Authority (NIA) is to intensify education on the national identification registration exercise to provide the public with the right information to speed up the exercise.

A tour of some selected centres in the Ga East Municipality during the second phase of the mass registration exercise in the Greater Accra Region by the Board members of NIA and newsmen on Monday, revealed that the exercise was being delayed because the people were not aware of the questions to be answered.

GNA observed that even though it was expected that less than 10 minutes should be spent on one person, it took about 15 minutes to complete processing a client.

Clients took time to think about questions posed before answering them, others either forgot or did not know they were to bring along any form of identification and had to return home for them after being in the queue for a long time.

The 10-day exercise is being undertaken in Ga West and South
Municipalities as well.

Officials at the registration centres suggested that posters with
information on questions to be asked should be pasted at the centres and other public places to educate the people.

Dr William Ahadzie, Executive Secretary of NIA, said the views expressed at the centres would be considered and education intensified to speed up the exercise.

He observed that the turn out on the first day was encouraging and hoped it would continue to help reduce the last minute rush which characterised such exercises.

Dr Ahadzie advised the public not to pay any money to the registration assistants.

He explained that after the mass registration exercise in all the 10
regions, permanent centres would be established in all metropolitan, municipal and districts to continue with the exercise.

Dr Ahadzie said the NIA would begin the printing of the identification cards in January 2010 alongside the exercise.

The exercise has already been undertaken in the Central, Western, Eastern and Volta Regions and would continue in Ashanti Region after Greater Accra Region.

Centres visited were, PRESEC Staff School, Queen of Peace Catholic School at Madina Old Road, Faith Baptist Community School at Madina Zongo Junction, Abokobi Presbyterian Junior High School and Haatso Rabbit Project Site.
