Speaking at a program at Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) under the theme “Educating and Igniting Change in the Ghanaian for national Development” the Scientist said the program seeks to generate strategies to aid in overcoming constraints, enhance awareness creation in the reduction of food waste in Ghana and influence development processes.

Dr. Agyemang Duah revealed that in the Food Waste Index report in 2021 by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), consumers across the globe waste over 931 million tons of food every year, the report stated.

She added that one out of nine people in the world do not have access to sufficient food indicating that hunger is one of the leading causes of death worldwide ahead of some killer disease.

Food waste in the various households have been the highest in Ghana and the most prevalent global challenge, with parties and funerals being fast-emerging areas contributing to food waste, she said.

Dr. Agyemang Duah stated that the exposure of the environment to waste food that ends up in landfill sites contributes to about 12% emission of anthropogenic gases and also makes the demand for food soar as well as prices.
