WENCHI: World Disability Day: WMA support some 70 PWDs
As part of the Global celebration of the International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities, the Wenchi Municipal Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has presented some relief items to about 70 Persons living with disability to enhance their standard of living.

The items as said by the Municipality Chief Executive Dr. Prince Kwakye Afriyie is to resource the federation to empower them to live a fulfilling life of self-dependence.

"This items which you see here today is to help the beneficiaries venture into commercially viable activities to enhance their standard of living" he stated.



According to the MCE the material were acquired from the disables share of the common fund allocated to the Assembly.

Educating the gathering at the brief ceremony held at the Municipal Assembly Dr. Prince Kwakye Afriyie explained that persons living with disabilities have 3 percent share of the quarterly releases of the District Assembly Common Fund which is meant for the upkeep of the disables in the Municipality.

He stressed that "the fund was previously disbursed in cash to the physically challenged persons for their use, the Akufo Addo's government however thought it wise to use the money to secure some source of living with the consent of the PWDs instead of handing out physical cash to the beneficiaries which they usually dissipate in no time".



"In compliance with this directive, the Assembly decided to use the funds to set you up in small business ventures which would help improve your economic status instead of you taking the cash, which is in line with the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo's vision to support the less privileged and marginalized in society to be able to earn a living for themselves hence the provision of the income generating equipment" he add.

He said, it is the wish of the President to support all people living with disability with at least one workable equipment before his four year term is over.



The MCE, Dr Prince Kwakye Afiriyie, who presented some brand new refrigerators, deep freezers, sewing machines, carpentry tools, fufu pounding machines, plastic chairs among other things to beneficiaries to enable them start business on their own quoted some GHC 90,000.00 as the cost incurred by the assembly in procuring the items.

He then used the opportunity to thanked the Member of Parliament for Wenchi Prof George Gyan Baffour, for his continue support to the physically challenged, funding them periodically to enhance their livelihood and also assisting the children of the disables to attained the best education in the district and beyond.



The leadership of the Ghana Federation of the disability after receiving the items commended government for the support and promised to make good use of the items.

Present at the ceremony were the Municipal Chairmen of the Ghana Federation for the Disables and the Ghana Blind Union Richard Ofosu and Hafisatu Adams respectively.
