According to the GAMA Coordinator, Environmental Health Officers within the MMDAs in the capital are people known within the communities so they trust the Assemblies to provide them with the household toilets.

He further pointed out in an interview that initially when GAMA was rolling out household toilets, there were challenges until the Assemblies got involved, because people within deprived communities with Greater Accra had issues of trust.

“Most of the people went to the Assemblies to pay for the cheap kind of toilet GAMA was rolling out, there is a mobile money platform where people could pay money to, when it adds up to the total amount they are provided with the toilet facility”.

Mr. George Aseidu noted that with health inspectors on the street, bad attitude that had been acquired over the years, throwing of refuse anywhere and defecating openly would be stopped.

“We need to enforce the law by making sure there are people within the communities who are inspecting and ensuring that people do the right thing; we have to get them at vantage points to ensure that people do not throw waste anyhow and openly defecate”, he advised.

Sector Minister noted that, government is on track, sanitation offices exist in all the MMDAs, they are two or three offices, but not the Assemblies have a pool of them.

“Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, (KMA) has inaugurated one hundred of them, and Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies had made provisions for sanitation guards”
