Wa West is a zoo of diseases - Health Director
The District Director of the Ghana Health Services in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region has described the district as a zoo of many diseases, such as Meningitis, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Yaws and many others.

The Wa West district is a rural district and inhabitants are predominantly farmers and women and children pick Shea fruits and nuts exposing them to snake bites.

The director, Mr. Cliford Veng disclosed this in his welcome address at the district 2017 annual health review yesterday at the district Hospital conference hall in Wechau

According to the director, the major challenge confronting the district is inadequate funding for service delivery, the district largely depends on the little Internal Generated Funds but suffers slow and irregular reimbursement by NHIA.



The district director of Ghana health services in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region has pledged with his staff not to leave any stone unturned to inject efficiency and quality into the governance and leadership to strengthen the health system this year and beyond.

He said, hard work, innovation, discipline and integrity would be their priority for improved service in the district.

Mr. Cliford said they have seen an increase in skilled delivery from 40.9% in 2016 to 48.7% in 2017,family planing coverage had also seen great improvement, it increases from 34.5% in 2016 to 42.8% in 2017.he said this was achieved through the organization of durbars, floats and radio discussions.

The director also added that TB cases detection rate has over the year increased and this was achieved through vigorous screening of all cases at the OPD, this was also coupled with staff training that provoked case search during community programmes

The Hon.District Chief Executive for the Wa West District Edward Laabiir Sabor has disclosed that the assembly is committed to expanding the infrastructural base of the health sector to make it vibrant to be able to deliver the quality services to the people.



The DCE has also promised to furnish existing 5No. CHPS compounds as well as the children’s Ward under construction, he said they are in the process of working to handover a Semidetached Bungalow for the occupation of Doctors and health professionals posted to the district.

He urge the staff to continue their commitment to serving the people and hoping that the remaining challenges will be addressed soon

The review was on the theme, “Improving efficiency in governance and management of the health system the role of the leadership of the district health service” and brought together stakeholders in health service delivery in the district
