“We need to have the desire and commitment to build a healthy and prosperous economy that will attract foreign investment for the benefit of all of us,” he said.

Mr Wilkinson made the call on Tuesday during the 61st Independence Anniversary Celebration held on the theme: “Ghana beyond Aid” at Amasaman.

He said the theme was suitable for the occasion saying; “As you are no doubt aware, dependence on foreign aid for the growth of a nation’s economy is not the best. A nation cannot be independent if that nation relies on large inflows of foreign aids to support its economy.”

Mr Wilkinson said it was in the recognition of the government who has stressed on the need to move from aid to trade and investment, hence investing in education, agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

Speaking with Ghanadistricts.com, He said, the Government has embarked on the use of technology to improve productivity in agriculture, invested in education and has undertaken the One District One Factory initiative to help process our raw materials into finished and semi-finished goods.

Mr Wilkinson said this would assist the country to fetch higher income to improve the balance of trade indicators.

“With higher foreign exchange earnings, the country can improve upon its infrastructural development which will in turn facilitate the growth of the private sector and would lead to more job creation and prosperity for the people.

“When more jobs are created the rate at which the employed youth leave the country for non-existent greener pastures in other countries will be reduced,” he said.
