Assemblies have mandate to ensure sanitation bye-laws work - Minister

Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has said the various Assemblies have bye-laws to ensure that sanitation laws are obeyed.

“Every space in Ghana is covered by the Assemblies, it is their duties to ensure that the bye-laws are working, we at the Sanitation Ministry our duty is to monitor to ensure that they work”.

According to the sector Minister it is the duties of the Assemblies to ensure that punitive measures are put in place; as we are asleep people throw refuse into the gutters, they do not do it for you and I to see.

She noted that when it comes to flood control, it is the Ministry of Works and Housing that carries out that responsibility, and the Odaw River is featuring prominently in the list of drains they will be working on.

“There is a new plastic law coming, it will go to Parliament soon, what is in the system vis–a-vis the drains will be removed. But our attitudes must change to ensure that we do not put new plastic wastes back into the system, we drink pure water we drop it on the ground where does it go?”

She further pointed out, on our way to work as Ghanaians, you see someone doing the wrong thing as an active citizen talk against it and we will provide hotlines for people to send complains to the various Assemblies.

“We should know which Assemblies is responsible for which locations, that will also help and we will let the public know about this”

Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah made this disclosure during her interaction with the media on her tour to the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water project (GAMA) office at Madina.
