According to the Mayor of Accra government through Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water project, is ensuring that bigger drains are constructed to accommodate a lot of water and to reduce flooding in Accra.

In an interview with journalists, the MCE recounted how a similar exercise was undertaken at Mallam junction to stop the annual flooding there when the rain set in.

He noted that the flooding being experienced at Kaneshie first traffic light has become a challenge, as a result of much bigger drain upstream.

“I am told the drain upstream is about four meters (4m) and flows into a point six meters (0.6m) which is very small”.

“We are going to cut the road and construct a four meter size unto an underground drain which is also a four meter size, so that the water from upstream Bubuashie Odorkor Darkuman from all these areas the water from there can pass through easily and conveniently to the underground drain”.

Also it rained two weeks ago, Accra did not experience any flooding, but there was flooding at Kaneshie first light for a period of time simply because of the size of the drain cannot absorb, the amount of water that is passing through.

The consultant had assured us that within a month they should be through with the constructing of the drain, starting from 2nd March 2019.

“We are appealing to motorist that there would be inconveniences, they should bear with us within the period, alternative routes had been created for them to use. We are hoping that at the end of one month we would not experience flooding within, within the year we are hoping to address all the major flooding areas in Accra”.
