Jaman North honoures farmers on 34th Farmers’ Day
The Jaman North District Assembly honoured hardworking and gallant farmers in the district.

This year's district celebration was held at Dawiri a farming community in the district and for the first time in the history of the district 30 farmers were awarded.

This year's overall district best farmer was won by Mr Twum Solomon, and he took home 5 sets of Wellington boots, 5 cutlasses, a brand-new try-cycle, and knapsack spraying machine and a radio set.

Mr Asum Joseph of Asuokor, age 28 was adjudged the 1st Runner-up with prizes including a brand-new motor bike, a knapsack spraying machine, a radio set, 5 Wallington boots, 5 cutlasses as well as a piece of cloth. The 2nd runner-up was a 45 year old man, Zakaria Abu from Jinini. He took home a brand-new bicycle, a knapsack spraying machine, 5 willinton boots, a brand-new foam mattress, a cloth, one packet of roofing sheet 5 cutlasses as well as a pesticide.



Other were also awarded for being best farmers in various agriculture productions. The best maize farmer went to Obeng Sammuel from Asantekurom, best rice farmer went to Atta Solomon with Sieh Kwasi Emmanuel winning District Best Farmer.

Others were best cocoyam farmer, Mr Baah Francis, Mr Nketia Sylvester also won best cashew farmer, Madam Comfort Ankamaa won best citrus farmer, Mr Obeng Kusi Nelson won best palm oil farmer, best plantain farmer, Mr Oppong Dominic with Mr Ameyaw Martin winning district best tomato Farmer.



Again, Mr Agyei Francis won best pepper farmer, Miss Obeng Ophelia best garden eggs farmer as well as Miss Diana Nyarko and Mr Ankomah Johnson taking the best groundnut and cowpea farmers respectively.

The Assembly this year decided to present special awards to some farmers and institutions. In this category, the District Best Assembly man in Agriculture went to Hon. Ansu George, District Best Senior High School in Agric went to Goka Senior and Technical School, Miss Rosina Ama Kraah took the District Best Female Farmer, Mr Koranteng Jonny went home with District Best Youth in Agric award.

Mr Christopher Ankamah took home with District Best Physically challenge award, Mr Sieh Kofi Isaac left with District Best innovative farmer, Mr Asare James District Agro-forestery award, Mr Mfodwo Rexford won District Best Non-Traditional Farmer with Mr Sekyere Yaw Gotta also taking home District Best MOFA Extension Officer. Mr Amoro Abu and Mr Twene David with Adu Francis winning District Best Cattle Farmer, Small Ruminants and Best Piggery farmers respectively.



The DCE, Hon. Adane Ankomah in his sessional address congratulated the hardworking farmers for their immense efforts of providing food in abundance in the district.

He therefore made mentioning of some agricultural inputs received by the district to be disbursed to farmers in the district. He said, the office of MOFA in district received 80 bags of maize and 13 bags of rice and has been able to distribute all to farmers.

Another area he touched was the acquisition of vegetables of which he made mentioned of the unit receiving 122 bags of pepper and 130 bags of tomato and distributed 20 bags pepper and 25 bags of tomato with the rest of the bags still in stock waiting for farmers to come for them.



Hon. Adane Ankomah continued that, the department of MOFA in the district received 6381 bags of NPK fertilizer in the year and has been able to distribute 1237 with the rest still in stock waiting for farmers to come for them. Same on fertilizer, the DCE said, the unit received 1919 bags of Urea and 1000 bags of SOA and has so far distributed 315 and 122 respectively. He therefore advised farmers to contact the unit for these equipment before they go waste.
