Heavy Storm Hits Wa West Displacing Residents

Hundreds of residents in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region have been rendered homeless following a rainstorm that hit the area.

The disaster, which occurred on Tuesday, affected houses, Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, schools, farm produce and household items worth several thousands of Cedis.

A number of the victims of the storm, mostly peasant farmers, have now been displaced and are living with friends and family.

A day nursery school at Varempiri in the district collapsed during the storm, and portions of the only three-unit classroom block at Varempiri Methodist Primary Block, during the storm, had its roof ripped off.

The school’s headteacher, Yakubu Abbas,who spoke about the damage to Citi News, said academic activity is likely to be brought to a halt if the Ghana Education Service does not intervene.

“Our classrooms were destroyed and the KG block has almost totally collapsed. The primary school also collapsed, breaking the beams. Some of the roofing sheets were also ripped off by the rainfall.”

“When we resume and the school is still at this state, we will be forced to write to the [Ghana Education Service Office] and wait for it to be finally repaired before we come back,” Yakubu Abbas said.

The National Disaster Management Organisation [NADMO] is yet to come to the aid of the victims.
