The first phase of the 650 bed capacity medical center was constructed and commissioned by erstwhile Mahama administration at a cost of $217 million.

The facility, which was initially scheduled to open in November 2017, was eventually delayed after series of power struggles between the Health Ministry and authorities of Ghana’s Premier University over who manages the new health center.

Speaking at a Press briefing today, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of the new Medical Center (UGMC), Dr. Anarfi Asamoah Baah, noted that work will soon resume on the phase two of the facility after Parliament’s approval of a 50 million dollar loan to help complete the project.

He however, revealed that, the facility will meantime handle only referral cases from other hospitals in the region.

He insisted that, management was also putting plans in place to develop a better patient to health personnel relationship to ensure patient satisfaction at the facility.

He added that, “management will provide a favorable working atmosphere for all personnel in order to enable them carryout their duties in a professional manner.”

He disclosed that the facility has received financial clearance for about 800 health personnel but was quick to add that management “will not rash into accepting all the 800 health workers at a go”.
