Very soon, the Ga East Municipal Assembly will own a waste recycling plant to professionally manage waste within the Greater Accra Region and surrounding areas.

Accra generates about 1,500-1,800 tonnes of waste per day and out of this only 1,200 is collected and conveyed to landfill sites within the country.

It’s only Zoomlion Ghana Limited that manages a waste recycling facility at Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipality in Accra.

The facility has the capacity to turn solid waste into raw materials to feed the plastic industry as well as manure for the Agricultural sector.

Chief Executive for the Ga East Municipal Assembly, Mr. John Kwao Sackey who revealed the intention by the Assembly to acquire such facility in a phone interview on Citifm’s Breakfast show today said the Ga East will liaise with the La-Nkwantanaang Madina Municipal Assembly to procure the facility.

“There are plans for Ga East and La Nkwantanaan Madina Municipal Assembly, coming together to have a recycling plant so that at least we can use waste as a resource instead of dumping it,” he said.

The need for the recycling plant according to Mr. Sackey was also to help reduce the pressure on landfill sites which has over the years been the final disposal sites where refused are dumped.

“As a nation we shouldn’t encourage landfill sites because we don’t have enough lands to be receiving the waste” adding  that, that is why “the MLGRD is encouraging all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to come together to acquire recycling plants”.
