Falling standard of education in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region remain concern to stakeholders who are making efforts to reverse the trend.

At a meeting with Assembly Members, Municipal Chief Executive, Andrews Sodah said even though pragmatic measures adopted by the Assembly and the Municpal Education Directorate have resulted in slight improvement 15.04% in 2013, a lot more need to be done to address the challenge.

In view of this, the MCE said the Assembly in collaboration with the Municipal Education Directorate (MED) would hold separate durbars with Teachers at Klo-Agogo, Nkurakan and Somanya to discuss the challenges and determine the way forward. "It is quite worrying that the huge investment being made into education by the Government and the Assembly does not reflect in improved student performance".

He blamed high teacher absenteeism as the main contributory factor responsible for this abysmal academic performance of pupils.

As part of the strategies to eradicate this canker, he tasked assembly members to intensify visits to schools in their areas to check on teacher absenteeism and know of challenges and submit reports to the Municipal Director of Education and copy the Assembly for remedial action to be taken.

Touching on the Eastern University project, Mr. Sodah said remarkable progress has been made towards the establishment of

Eastern University in Somanya, adding that stakeholders’ meeting to include Yilo Krobo Traditional Council, the Clergy, National Union of Yilo Youth Association (NUYYA), Sub-Committee Chairmen of the Assembly and other interest groups would be organized to discuss and take decisions on emerging issues to further smoothen the process.

He called on the citizenry of Yilo to support the government in its quest to establish the University.
